People with a Learning Disability

A learning disability affects how a person learns new things and understands information. It usually starts early in life.

Some conditions, like Down’s syndrome or cerebral palsy, are found at birth. Others show up in childhood, when a child does not reach the usual milestones.

A person with a learning disability may find it harder to:

  • Learn new skills and information
  • Manage daily tasks like personal care and money
  • Read, write and do maths
  • Communicate and share how they feel
  • Make and keep friendships
  • Manage frustration, anxiety or impulsiveness

Some people also have physical health needs or mental health difficulties. Signs of depression or anxiety can be mistaken for part of the learning disability, so they are easy to miss.

Accessing Support
