Goodwood House is a specialist all-female supported living service in Brighton and Hove, providing focused and expert support to women living with the complex interplay of mental health conditions, autism spectrum conditions, and learning disabilities. The service is rooted in the understanding that women with this combination of needs have historically been underserved by services designed primarily for other populations, and that truly excellent support requires both clinical expertise and a deep commitment to gender-sensitive, culturally responsive care.
Goodwood House operates as part of Unicare’s established Brighton and Hove cluster — benefiting from organisational depth, shared clinical expertise, and strong local commissioning relationships — while maintaining the intimacy and individuality of a small, dedicated specialist service. Every woman at Goodwood House is known as an individual, supported by a team that understands her history, her preferences, her communication, and her aspirations.
The Goodwood House support model is anchored in Positive Behaviour Support. Every resident has an individually developed Behaviour Support Plan, underpinned by a functional assessment of the factors influencing their wellbeing and behaviour. Plans are not static documents — they evolve as the person’s understanding of themselves develops, as trust deepens with the support team, and as goals and circumstances change.
Trauma-informed practice is central to the Goodwood House model. The women we support frequently carry histories of significant trauma — often compounded by the experience of previous inadequate or harmful services. The Goodwood House team is trained to understand the neurobiological and psychological impact of trauma, and to provide support that is genuinely healing rather than simply managing or containing. Safety, choice, collaboration, trust, and empowerment are the foundations of every therapeutic relationship at the service.
The Goodwood House staff team is an all-female team, carefully recruited and rigorously trained. Staff bring expertise in women’s mental health, autism and learning disability, trauma-informed approaches, and positive behaviour support. All complete Unicare’s comprehensive mandatory training programme and participate in monthly group reflective practice facilitated by Unicare’s PBS Specialist.
The service benefits from Unicare’s organisation-wide specialist resources — including access to the PBS Specialist for complex case consultation, the management expertise of Rashied Shote as Registered Manager, and a peer support network across the wider Brighton and Hove service cluster. The House Manager provides consistent day-to-day leadership and is supported by an experienced Service Manager who oversees quality, compliance, and outcomes.
Goodwood House offers a carefully considered living environment — calm, predictable, and designed with sensory sensitivity in mind. The service includes an outdoor garden, providing a vital connection to natural space for women who may find busy communal environments overwhelming. Internal spaces are thoughtfully arranged to offer both social connection and quiet private retreat, with individual bedrooms personalised to reflect each resident’s identity and preferences.
The Brighton and Hove location provides excellent access to the natural environment — including parks, seafront, and open spaces — as well as a wide range of cultural, therapeutic, and community resources. Residents are supported to access these resources at their own pace and in ways that are safe and meaningful for them.
