About the Service

Guildford Avenue is Unicare’s specialist mixed supported living service in Surbiton, providing expert, person-centred support to adults of all genders with mental health conditions, autism spectrum conditions, and learning disabilities. The service is located in the leafy, accessible suburb of Surbiton in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames — one of Surrey’s most desirable and well-connected residential areas, with outstanding access to London, the Surrey countryside, and a thriving local community.

Guildford Avenue represents Unicare’s expanding Surrey portfolio, demonstrating the organisation’s capability to deliver specialist complex care not only in Brighton and Hove and East Sussex but across the wider South East. The service sits within Surrey County Council’s commissioning framework and benefits from Unicare’s established relationships with Surrey’s health and social care system.

Our Support Approach — PBS and Trauma-Informed Practice

Guildford Avenue operates within Unicare’s full PBS framework. Every resident receives a comprehensive Behaviour Support Plan, developed through careful functional assessment and built around the individual’s specific communication style, sensory needs, mental health presentation, learning profile, and personal aspirations. The PBS approach is complemented by trauma-informed practice across all aspects of support — from daily interactions to the physical environment, from crisis prevention planning to the management of transitions and change.

The service has developed particular expertise in supporting adults with complex co-occurring conditions — where autism, learning disability, and mental health conditions interact in ways that create distinct and sometimes challenging presentations. The Guildford Avenue team approaches complexity with confidence, curiosity, and a genuine commitment to understanding each resident as a whole person rather than a collection of diagnoses.

Our Team — Experience, Expertise and Continuity

The Guildford Avenue staff team is a mixed team — including both male and female workers — with expertise spanning mental health, autism, learning disability, PBS, trauma-informed support, and clinical care. All staff complete Unicare’s mandatory training programme and participate in regular PBS-informed supervision and reflective practice.

The service benefits from Unicare’s wider Surrey network — including established links to Surrey County Council commissioning teams, Surrey NHS services, and community mental health and learning disability teams. Unicare’s PBS Specialist provides regular specialist consultation for the Guildford Avenue team. The service is managed by a dedicated House Manager and overseen by the Service Manager and Registered Manager, Rashied Shote.

The Environment — Home, Sensory Space and Community

Guildford Avenue offers a spacious, well-maintained, and thoughtfully designed living environment in one of Surrey’s most attractive and accessible residential areas. The property includes a generous outdoor garden — an important therapeutic resource, particularly valued in a setting with easy access to Surbiton’s parks and the Thames riverside — and sensory-aware communal spaces that accommodate both social engagement and quiet personal time.

Surbiton’s location — with fast rail connections to London Waterloo (approximately 17 minutes), proximity to the Thames, Bushy Park, and Richmond Park, and a vibrant high street with excellent community amenities — makes Guildford Avenue an exceptional base for community integration, family contact, and access to specialist services. Residents are actively supported to make full use of Surbiton and the wider Kingston area as part of their personalised community participation plans.
