Unicare Live-in Care
What is live-in care??

Unicare has been providing high quality live-in care to clients across the country. Our care is focused on keeping people safely and happily in the comfort and familiarity of their own home, whilst improving their overall health and wellbeing.

Unicare offers live-in care services that begin with a thorough assessment and the creation of a personalised care plan. The care plan is continuously monitored and adjusted as needed to meet the changing needs of the client. Where required our nurses provide hands-on care alongside carers and maintain open communication with the family. They also offer guidance and support to promote safety and well-being. Collaboration with other care providers ensures a coordinated approach to achieving the client’s goals.

Staying at home with high-quality live-in care

According to a survey conducted by the Live-in care hub, 97% of us given the choice would prefer to carry on living at home. However, when families are faced with the realisation that their loved one or family member needs increasing levels of care and support, many still feel the only option is to move into a care or nursing home. Whilst there are many good care homes, live- in care is fast becoming the preferred choice for those who wish to continue to live in their own home, whilst receiving the care and support they need to have a better quality of life.

There are many other compelling benefits of receiving care in your much-loved home as opposed to enduring the upheaval and disruption that comes from moving into a care home. Highly personalised one-to-one care just cannot be provided in a care home and the way you choose to live your life will be restricted by imposed routines – when to get up, eat your food and when to socialise. For couples live-in care means you can stay together as a loving couple with the care and support you need something that is not guaranteed if both of you move into a residential care home.

Live-in care for couples is a very cost-effective option when compared to needing two packages of care in a care home – with live-in care there is only a nominal additional fee to provide care to a couple.

Benefits of Live-in Care vs Care Home

What is included in Unicare Live-in Care Service?

Providing discreet and sensitive personal care

This can include the task-orientated aspects of caring for someone, like bathing and getting dressed, but also those that promote self-esteem, like having your nails maintained, or your hair styled.

Companionship as and when you need it

Our carers will provide companionship whilst ensuring your privacy is respected. We ensure that a perfectly matched carer shares similar values and interests to make life interesting, stimulating and enjoyable, whilst being there for you to support your emotional and psychological needs.

Facilitating social arrangements in the home

Your carer will ensure you can invite friends over for socialisation and celebrations, providing the support you need to enjoy yourself and not worry about organising anything.

Managing and administering medications

Our professional carers are trained in medications management and use an electronic medications system to ensure all medications are managed proactively and effectively. They will also collect prescriptions from the pharmacy.

Trips and visits out of the home in your local community

Our carers know how important it is to ensure you can continue to do as much you wish and that you remain connected to your local community – whether that is a stroll round the local park or attending clubs or groups in the local area or visiting friends or those shops you always have.

Ensuring safe mobility in and around the home

We have an in-house Occupational Therapist, Jackie Cooper who will provide guidance and expert advice as to what equipment can help improve safe movement and mobility around your home, whilst minimising falls. Jackie is well placed to provide recommendations on home adaptations that aim to improve the way you live your life in your home.

Domestic tasks

This includes cleaning of all rooms and vacuuming throughout to keep your house to the standards of cleanliness and tidiness you always have.

Specialist and expert nurse-led care

We provide nurse-led care which means your live-in carer is trained to monitor and identify any changes in your health, responding appropriately and avoiding any unnecessary hospital admissions. Uniquely our care teams are supported by our in-house Specialist Nurse, Thomas WillMann. In addition to supporting our care delivery Thomas provides much-needed support to our clients and their families. As part of our commitment to delivering a high-quality home care service, we monitor and measure health outcomes to ensure we continually improve the care we provide.

Caring for your much-loved pet

Carers will happily support looking after your pet, including taking dogs for regular walks.

Choosing a care at home provider

Once you have understood what live-in carer’s do and how live-in care works, and that live-in care is the right choice for you and your family, you will need to do some research into choosing a live-in care provider. You will also need to decide whether you use an introduction agency, whereby a carer is introduced to you but you employ and manage them directly, or you use a fully managed service provider who is regulated and inspected by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) to ensure the highest standards of care are provided. The UKHCA (the United Kingdom’s Home Care Association) is a membership body of care at home providers, and is a good place to get information on high quality care at home providers you could consider when making your decision.

Live-in care FAQ’s

What do I need to provide my live-in carer?

All that is required is a spare room for the carer to have their own space during breaks and to sleep, with a TV for their relaxation and internet access so they are able to complete the records required to manage your care. Your live-in carer will cook your daily meals and eat the same food, with you if you wish.

The carer will need to have a two-hour break in any 24-hour period, which many clients usually find works best when they are resting in the afternoon. If you require care and support during this period many will have family visit to cover this break, or we can organise for an hourly care provider to cover this for you.

What happens when my carer has time off or goes on holiday?

At Unicare, we understand the importance of continuity and consistency of care. However as we are sure you will appreciate, that it is important for our carers own wellbeing to have sufficient time off work and holidays to rest, so that they continue to deliver the highest quality of care that you should expect.

You will have a team of two carers who will provide care in your home usually for two weeks at a time, rotating to the next carer after two weeks. Whilst this is a typical rota patten we do offer various patterns, including a four-week working period with two weeks off. A team of the same two carers ensure they really get to know and understand you as a person. If one carer requires a short amount of time off, we will always endeavour for the other carer to provide cover to ensure consistency of care.

As a fully managed service, however we have a rapid response and relief team of highly trained professional carers who can come to support you during your carer’s holidays and for longer periods of leave. These are always planned and scheduled well in advance and communicated to you and your family so you can be reassured that we can continue to meet your needs.

Can you provide live-in care for me and my spouse?

Unicare provides live-in care to couples. Receiving care in the comfort of the home you have enjoyed together for, what is probably many years with all your memories and possessions around you is fast becoming the preferred choice for couples, as opposed to enduring the upheaval, disruption and emotional upset of moving into a care home. Whether one of you is living with a specialist condition, like dementia or Parkinson’s and the other one just requires mobility or frailty care, or to recover from an operation, we will provide you with a perfectly matched carer who will support you both to live a better quality of life as a couple, but also individually according to your needs, choices and preferences.

One of the most significant considerations when planning care for a couple, is the cost of care. If a couple moves into a care home, the cost of care is typically double the price of receiving high quality, live-in care at home. With live-in care there is only one weekly fee for the care team, with a small supplement depending on needs, so it is a very cost-effective alternative to moving into a care home.

I have dementia, how can live-in care help me?

At Unicare, we know receiving care in the comfort, safety and familiarity of your own home has far reaching benefits in improving overall health and wellbeing for a person living with dementia. Moving at any stage in life can be very stressful, but can negatively impact a person who is living with dementia, which is why many families up and down the country choose live-in care as an alternative to moving into a care home to receive high quality dementia care.

All our professional carers receive unrivalled training in dementia care before they care and support someone with the condition. Our work with the Contented Dementia Trust to introduce the SPECAL approach to dementia care helps us to understand and discover what is important to the person living with dementia, enabling us to develop a purposeful and meaningful programme of care. Working closely with Dementia UK.

Can I get any funding for live-in care?

There may be care funding available to you to receive a live-in care service depending on your financial circumstances and your care needs. The Local Authority will only fund care at home (referred to as social funding) if your assets are worth less than £23,500, which we know that sadly for many families their financial situation exceeds.

If you are assessed and have an identified healthcare need you may be eligible for NHS Continuing Healthcare funding organised by your local Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) to support you to receive care in your own home.

Many families are faced with having to fund the care they receive themselves (referred to as self-funding care). For these families there are options to help finance care at home, including a Care Fees Annuity, which is an insurance policy you purchase to cover the cost of your care, or by realising capital in your assets through an Equity Release scheme.
