Training & Support

Taking care of you

Wherever your care placement takes you, help will always be on hand. You’ll have 24/7 access to your care management team, a confidential phone line and the compassionate support should you ever need it.

We believe in shorter, more flexible working patterns that put life in better balance, helping you to maintain your high standards. And wherever possible, we’ll place you with a client who shares your interests and hobbies, so you can bond more quickly and enjoy your work to the full.

Developing your career

Training, supervision, coaching and mentoring are available to all our carers and you’ll be given the chance to reach your potential with opportunities for professional development and career progression.

Like many of our team, you may want to specialise in caring for people with complex conditions – like dementia or Parkinson’s – or grow into a managerial role. Wherever your ambition lies, the team around you will give you the support you need to achieve it.

Carer community

All our carers become part of a supportive community, helping each other both in person and remotely. They have their own online forum, where they share experiences, advice, tips and best practice, on everything from the latest care techniques to delicious home-cooked recipes.

Induction

Our in-depth,  induction programme gives you the right tools, skills and mindset to deliver outstanding care. The course takes place in London, with sessions led by our industry experts and condition specialists.

You’ll be taught live-in care skills, innovative care techniques and the knowledge needed to enable our clients to live safe and well at home.

The course will refresh and develop your knowledge. It covers a wide range of topics including:

  • Neurological Conditions
  • Understanding Dementia
  •  Basic Life Support
  • Safeguarding, Mental Capacity and DOLS
  • Medication Administration
  •  Clinical Observation
  •  Ageing Process
  • Common Health Conditions
  • Personal Care
  • Skin Care
  • Continence Management
  • Nutrition and Hydration
  • End of life Care
  • People Moving and Handling

You’ll also learn about being an employee of Unicare:

  • Our values and culture
  • Your terms of employment, i.e. pay, holidays and expenses
  • IT & e-learning – understanding our systems
  • Wellbeing – how we look after ourselves at work

You will experience a variety of training techniques, including hands-on applied learning, e-learning, reflective practice, workshops and practical learning and assessment.

Specialist Condition Training

The people we care for are all very different, so the care we provide must be every bit as individual. It takes specialist training to fully understand the challenges your client faces and to deliver highly tailored, personal support.

In partnership with leading charities, including Contented Dementia Trust, Parkinson’s UK and The Stroke Association, we’ve developed a series of industry-leading programmes to further your training and knowledge.

If your client has dementia, for example, you’ll learn how to treat the whole person – the mind and the body, not just the symptoms of the disease. And you won’t be alone.

Shadow Training

Our shadow training programme is especially designed for exceptional individuals who have a passion to become a carer but who have limited care experience.

As with all applicants, you’ll attend our induction programme, but asked to complete a significant part of the Care Certificate qualification beforehand.

Following induction and with the certificate completed, you’ll be teamed with a more experienced carer for your first placement, under the supervision of a dedicated Care Manager.

Ongoing Training

After the induction course, your 16-week probationary period will begin. During this time, you’ll work towards your Care Certificate online, with the support of our Learning and Development team, as well as your Care Manager. You’ll gain valuable knowledge and skills, which you can put into practice in your day-to-day care.

Workshops

Our carer workshops, which run throughout the year, will deepen your knowledge and understanding of issues surrounding Dementia, Parkinson’s disease, end of life care and more.

Diploma

As an employee of Unicare, you’ll have the opportunity to study for health and social care diploma’. It’s part of our commitment to your development and we cover the cost of the course.
